When failure is not an option, trust the specialists who rebuild, restore, and improve.
At Specialty Gear Drives, we ain’t about just patchin’ up problems—we completely restore your critical power transmission assets. For over 40 years, we have stood as a trusted leader in the comprehensive repair, rebuild, and restoration of all industrial gearboxes, gear drives, and complex transmission equipment. Our process is engineered to do one thing: return your equipment to service faster, operating at peak efficiency, and with reliability that meets or exceeds original specifications. We understand the pressures of minimizing costly downtime. That’s why we offer a solution that is technically superior and typically saves you up to 60% compared to the high cost and long lead times associated with purchasing new OEM units.
Our Repair process is a systematic, nine-step protocol performed in our facility in Largo, Florida. This commitment to precision ensures absolute quality from initial diagnosis to final sign-off.
The process begins before disassembly. We utilize advanced Vibration Analysis and thermal imaging to establish baseline integrity and pinpoint the precise source of failure—be it bearing fatigue, gear tooth pitting, or misalignment. This data-driven approach allows us to correct the root cause, not just the symptom.
The unit is completely disassembled, and all parts are thoroughly cleaned in specialized washing stations. Critical components, including shafts and housings, undergo Nondestructive Testing (NDT)—such as Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) or Dye Penetrant Inspection—to detect subsurface cracks and material fatigue invisible to the naked eye.
Every gear, bearing journal, and mounting surface is meticulously measured by our Timken-Certified Technicians. Dimensions are logged against OEM tolerances and any deviation is documented in a detailed inspection report, providing a transparent roadmap for the required scope of work.
We specialize in restoring damaged gearbox casings. This includes Line Boring to correct bearing bore alignment and ensure that new components sit perfectly centered. We also repair mounting feet and flange surfaces to restore the structural integrity necessary for smooth, quiet operation.
We only use premium, high-quality replacement parts, including high-grade bearings (such as Timken, SKF, FAG, NSK, etc) and seals. The gearbox is reassembled in a dedicated, clean environment, ensuring proper shimming, backlash, and gear pattern alignment are set to exact micro-tolerances.
This is where our expertise shines. If existing gears are beyond repair, we reverse-engineer the worn component. Our in-house gear manufacturing division then fabricates a new gear, utilizing precise hobbing and grinding techniques and subjecting it to specialized heat treatment (e.g., carburizing) to achieve Brinell and Rockwell hardness ratings that match or exceed the original OEM standard.
Every repaired and rebuilt gearbox undergoes a rigorous 6-hour test run on a custom built test bench. This final step checks for minimal vibration, proper thermal stabilization, and zero leakage under simulated operating loads. If it doesn't pass, it doesn't leave.
The unit is sealed with durable, industrial-grade sealants and finished with a robust protective coating, ready to withstand the harshest operating conditions.
Upon passing, the unit is certified and delivered back to you, backed by our industry-leading 24-Month Warranty which goes into effect when you place that drive unit Back into production!
